Nordic Spirit Symposium

"Scandinavian Design: Simple and Beautiful"

Nordic Spirit Symposium

According to architect Gulla Jónsdóttir, “Scandinavian design is timeless — it is simple, beautiful, finely crafted, and made with natural materials that appeal on a fundamentally human level.” This symposium will feature talks on Scandinavian design, with topics ranging from contemporary architecture to furniture and ceramics.

After two years of taking place online, the 2023 symposium will be an in-person event. An online Zoom symposium precursor at 12:30 p.m. Jan. 11 and 7:30 p.m. Jan. 13, “Danish Modern: Design for Living,” will discuss the midcentury designs that popularized Scandinavian design in America. For information on how to join the Zoom sessions, email nordicspiritclassics@gmail.com.

Illustrated in-person talks during the Feb. 10-11 symposium include “Function Combined with Inspiration from Nature” by an Icelandic architect in Los Angeles; “Fluidity: Identity in Swedish Glass”; “Scandinavian Modern Design in Norway”; “From Blue Lace to Axel Salto: Two Centuries of Danish Ceramics”; “Finnish Design”; and “Scandinavian Design in the United States, 1890-1980,” a talk based on a current LACMA exhibition of the same name.

Reservations are requested for the Feb. 10 reception ($15) and required by Feb. 1 for dinner on Feb. 11 ($45). Admission is $25 for the Feb. 10 evening program, $50 for the daylong Feb. 11 program or $65 for both programs. Free to Cal Lutheran students, faculty and staff.
