Free Swedish Language Classes
The Scandinavian American Cultural and Historical Foundation invites the community to participate in free Swedish language lessons. Classes will meet weekly on Mondays in the Gilbert Sports and Fitness Center, Room 253, 130 Overton Court, Thousand Oaks.
Classes begin at 6 p.m., and social time (fika) will follow at 7 p.m.
The series is easy enough for beginners, but advanced speakers also can benefit. The goal is to engage students in Swedish small talk (småprata). The first hour is a formal class taught via Zoom by Maria Katinka, a full-time professional language teacher from Sweden. Participants will sit together in the same room while Katinka appears by Zoom.
The second hour is a time for practicing with classmates and tutors. Fika is a uniquely Swedish cultural concept, a time to pause and socialize with friends and colleagues for the purpose of sharing ideas and getting acquainted.
Tuition is free but RSVP is required. Prior to each class, participants will be emailed a handout for the next class. Children age 9 and older may attend if accompanied by a parent.
RSVP to Karen Darnall at karendarnall@me.com or 805-558-6916.
These classes are made possible by a bequest from Peggy Cabellero for “... teaching Swedish language, literature and culture.”
