Angeline Hayling: The Humanitarian Entrepreneur
Each year, the Cal Lutheran Alumni Board of Directors recognizes achievements that have brought honor and distinction to the university. The Outstanding Alumni Award is given to a Cal Lutheran graduate with a distinguished record of career achievements or humanitarian endeavors dedicated to social reform. Angeline Hayling, ’08, is the recipient of the 2025 Cal Lutheran Outstanding Alumni Award.
Service Beyond Oneself
Inspired by her father, a reverend who dedicated his life to community service and global outreach, Angeline Hayling has infused humanitarianism into her work as a fashion designer, author and entrepreneur for more than 15 years. As a child, Hayling had the opportunity to travel with her father, witnessing firsthand the impact of giving back and the importance of service beyond oneself.
“My father’s work instilled in me the understanding that compassion and action go hand in hand, and that we all have a responsibility to uplift those in need,” said Hayling.
Hayling holds a bachelor’s degree in management from Cameron University and a master’s degree in public policy and administration from Cal Lutheran. While at CLU, she engaged in thought-provoking coursework, meaningful interactions with professors and students, and impactful internships with humanitarian organizations.
The Path to Humanitarianism
One of Hayling’s most influential mentors during her time at CLU was Professor Jeff Gorell, a seasoned attorney, public servant and military officer whose depth of experience brought public policy to life in the classroom.
“Drawing on his experiences as a deputy district attorney for Ventura County, an intelligence officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve and a former speechwriter for Governor Pete Wilson, Professor Gorell had a way of making government feel dynamic, showing us that leadership wasn’t just about policy—it was about people, choices and standing for something bigger than yourself,” said Hayling.
Beyond the classroom, Hayling worked with the American Red Cross, assisting communities affected by crises and emergencies, and with the International Rescue Committee, providing support to refugees seeking asylum. These experiences deepened her understanding of human resilience, preparedness and the power of direct impact.

“The MPPA program at CLU taught me how to analyze complex systems, create sustainable solutions and lead with integrity, all of which have been invaluable in growing a mission-driven business,” said Hayling.
