Susan Ruby: A Legacy of Service

Each year, the Cal Lutheran Alumni Board of Directors recognizes achievements that have brought honor and distinction to the university. The Service to Alma Mater Award recognizes alumni who have demonstrated excellence in their field of service and have made outstanding contributions to the life and welfare of Cal Lutheran. Susan Ruby, ’84, is the 2025 recipient of the Cal Lutheran Service to Alma Mater Award.

A Life-Changing Experience

The first in her family to attend college, Susan Ruby arrived at Cal Lutheran a timid student, unsure of her place in the world. Four years later, she earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration, graduated Cum Laude and emerged as a self-assured young woman. Ruby credits her time at CLU as a life-changing experience that broadened her perspective and deepened her relationships with the people who have always made Cal Lutheran special: caring faculty, a welcoming pastor and engaged students who remain life-long friends.

A passionate advocate for the university, Ruby has served as a Cal Lutheran Convocator for nearly 30 years, strengthening the connection between the Lutheran Church and the university, while encouraging dozens of outstanding students to attend CLU.

“Cal Lutheran feels like family to me,” said Ruby. “My undergraduate experience changed my life in every way imaginable. I am proud to help a new generation of students find their place at CLU.”

In Service of Students

Ruby’s leaderships roles within the California Lutheran University Convocation have included Chair of the Grand Canyon Synod Caucus, Secretary of Convocation, and Chair of the At-Large Caucus, a position she has held for nearly 10 years. She is a past member of the Alumni Events Committee and a former Class Representative. As a student at CLU, Ruby was highly engaged on campus as Vice President of Associated Women Students, Small Group Coordinator for the Lord of Life Church Council, and a member of the Congregational Life Visitation Team.

Ruby spent the early part of her professional career in business roles, before discovering her passion for education as a high school counselor, guiding students through the college and career advising journey. Reflecting on the transformational experience of her undergraduate years at CLU, Ruby aims to help students find a campus community that will enrich their lives and help them become the best version of themselves.

“The college and career process can be a stressful time for students and families,” said Ruby. “I enjoy guiding young people as they navigate their plans for the future and find their own way in the world.”

As a devoted educator and counselor, Ruby is committed to encouraging and inspiring high school students to reach their highest potential. She is equally committed to elevating Cal Lutheran and maintaining an unbreakable bond with her alma mater.
