A charter faculty member of CLU, Dr. Nena Amundson was chair of the Physical Education/Kinesiology Department when she died suddenly on Feb. 7, 1999. Dr. Amundson received her degrees from Luther College, the University of Northern Colorado and the University of Southern California. After joining the faculty in 1961, Dr. Amundson developed and taught a variety of courses - from methods of teaching and coaching to physiology of exercise and the history of physical education. During her nearly 38 years at CLU, she coached women’s athletic teams and served as women’s athletic director for many years, making it her mission to boost athletic competition for women. Her service also extended beyond the CLU campus into the larger community, where she served as instructor for the American Red Cross which earned her the Red Cross Honorary Award. In 1981, Luther College presented Dr. Amundson with its Distinguished Service Award.
