Swedish Language Classes

Swedish Language Classes

The Scandinavian American Cultural and Historical Foundation invites the community to participate in the second semester of Swedish language lessons. Classes will meet weekly on Mondays in a new location: Alumni Hall, Room 123. Classes begin at 6 p.m., and social time will follow at 7 p.m. Classes start Jan. 26 and run through May 4, with no classes scheduled March 9 and April 6.

This 13-week series is for beginners, but advanced students, native speakers and Norwegian students are encouraged to attend. The goal is to prepare for Swedish small talk (småprata). The first hour will be a formal class taught via Zoom by Maria Katinka, a full-time professional language teacher from Sweden. Participants will sit together in the same room while Maria appears by Zoom.

The second hour will be a time to socialize with Swedish speakers during coffee break (Fika), and refreshments will be served. Fika is a uniquely Swedish cultural concept, a time to pause and socialize with friends and colleagues for the purpose of getting acquainted.

Tuition is free, but space is limited; RSVP is required. Prior to each class, participants will be emailed a handout to study. Children age 9 and older may attend if accompanied by a parent.

RSVP to Karen Darnall at karendarnall@me.com or 805-558-6916.

These Swedish classes are made possible by a bequest from Peggy Cabellero for teaching Swedish language, literature and culture.
