An Evening of Music with Ruth Naomi Floyd
Series of guest events Nov. 18 and 19
The California Lutheran University Office of the President is pleased to host guest artist Ruth Naomi Floyd — a renowned vocalist, composer, educator and photographer.
Please join us for a musical performance by Floyd featuring accompaniment from campus organist Adán Alejándro Fernández and the Kingsmen and Regals Quartets, as well as a collaboration with Mrs. Monique Nunes. The event also will include a conversation between President John Nunes and Floyd.
Floyd is an award-winning vocalist and composer whose discography is dedicated to a sacred jazz expression. Her honors include Best Vocal Recital Award at the San Francisco Classical Voice Audience Choice Awards, a National Endowment for the Arts Project Grant and NPR Music's Best Live Sessions of 2021. A committed music educator, she is the first African American woman to serve as founding director of a university jazz studies program in the United States. She served as director of jazz studies at Cairn University and is an adjunct professor and artist in residence at Temple University. She has taught music education and ensembles for 21 years at The City School. Floyd is also an award-winning fine art photographer, specializing in black and white portrait images. For more than 25 years, she has been devoted and active in providing compassionate care and spiritual support to people infected and affected by HIV and AIDS in Philadelphia and Africa.
