About

Professor Homero M. Magaña, M.A., M.S., PPS, distinguishes himself as a tenure-track instructor and Fieldwork Coordinator within the Graduate Counselor Education Program at California Lutheran University. He is also in his first year as a doctoral student in the Higher Education Leadership Program at California Lutheran University. His dedication to academic excellence is further exemplified in his role as Faculty Coach for the "Collaborative for Hispanics in Higher Education & Student Success" (CHESS) Male Initiative, housed in the Department of Arts and Sciences. This initiative reflects his commitment to fostering an inclusive educational environment, focusing on supporting the advancement of Hispanic male students in higher education.

Over eighteen years, he has guided students at all levels of education, from elementary through high school. He embraced pivotal roles during his 14 years at Moorpark Unified School District. As a school counselor, he championed the needs of English language learners and spearheaded the AVID program for several years, significantly enhancing students' academic journeys. His administrative roles, including overseeing individual education plans and coordinating the 504, AVID, and diversity programs, allowed him to shape educational policies and practices. More than just responsibilities, these roles were his avenues to forge meaningful change, directly impacting the school's culture and extending his influence into the community. His dedication supported students' growth and catered to the school district's needs. Each experience enriched his understanding of the critical importance of collaboration, consultation, and adequate supervision in creating supportive educational spaces. In his commitment to working closely with students and their families, he aimed to foster an environment where everyone felt valued, supported, and motivated. Handling caseloads that sometimes reached up to 1,200 students presented challenges, yet each day was an opportunity for learning, growth, and deeper community connection. Reflecting on these two decades, he valued the myriad interactions that deepened his insights into resilience, diversity, and the transformative power of education.

Homero's journey began in El Rincón De Don Pedro, Michoacán, Mexico, from where he and his family of seven embarked on a new life in the U.S. when he was just twelve years old, without any knowledge of English. Embracing the values of hard work and perseverance from a young age, he spent seven years when school was not in session alongside his father in the fields, harvesting lemons and oranges and engaging in landscaping work. His educational path took him from Fillmore Middle School to achieving his high school diploma at Fillmore High School, followed by furthering his education at Moorpark Community College and then at the University of California, Berkeley.

Homero's quest for knowledge took him to Spain and Morocco, where he studied abroad at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), further enriching his educational experience. He continued to build on his academic achievements by obtaining his Master of Science in Counseling and a PPS credential at San Diego State University and earning a second Master's degree in Educational Administration and an administrative credential from CSU Northridge, solidifying his expertise in the field.

On a personal front, Homero shares his life with Paola, his spouse and fellow school counselor, and their two sons, Diego Rafael and Milán Alejandro. Completing their family is Coko, a golden retriever who adds joy and companionship to their lives. Together, they embody a story of resilience, dedication, and pursuing the American dream.

Homero's inspiring narrative has been chronicled in the "New Horizons in Multicultural Counseling" (2008), showcasing his significant contributions to the field. Since 2006, he has distinguished himself as a bilingual K-12 professional school counselor, tirelessly advocating for equity and higher education access for all students through his motivational speeches and dedicated counseling. His expertise also extends to his role as a consultant for the California Education Round Table's Intersegmental Coordinating Committee (ICC) and the College Access Informational Continuum (CAIC) Initiative, furthering his impact on educational accessibility.

A fervent proponent of the AVID program, academic rigor, and higher education accessibility, Homero's commitment led him to share his insights at a White House Listening and Learning Conversation on School Counseling in 2014, where he also had the honor of introducing then-First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House College Opportunity Summit.

As a sought-after keynote speaker, Homero has addressed thousands at various esteemed conferences and events across the local, state, and national levels, including the Oxnard Community College's Education Day, the Ventura County California Association of Bilingual Education, the California Association of School Counselors State Conference, Supporting Access to Higher Education For Immigrant & Undocumented Students National Conference, among others. His influence extends to various educational forums, from K-16 assemblies to professional development events, underlining his role as a pivotal figure in educational advocacy.

Homero's journey and advocacy in education were celebrated by Nissan during the 2016 Hispanic Heritage Month, highlighting his achievements in a widely viewed social media campaign titled "Hispanics Who Dominate." His contributions have been widely recognized, earning him accolades such as the California SPARC Award at Oceanside High School in 2007, representation at the inaugural White House conversation on school counseling in 2014, and the "Champion of Education" Award by Assembly Member Jacqui Irwin in 2018. These honors, among others, underscore his unwavering commitment to fostering educational excellence and inclusivity.
