Jamie Banker, PhD, LMFT, AAMFT Approved Supervisor

About

Dr. Jamie Banker received her B.A. in Human Development and Family Studies from Colorado State University, her M.S. in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of San Diego, and her Ph.D. in Human Development and Marriage and Family Therapy from Virginia Tech. She is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and an AAMFT approved supervisor.  Dr. Banker’s primary clinical and research interests are women’s and family health, training integrated care professionals and collaboration between family therapists and medical professionals. These interests all fall under the larger umbrella of improving healthcare delivery.

As a practitioner, Dr. Banker treats individuals, couples and families in therapy and supervises training therapists. She specializes in treating issues related to women’s health. After completing her PhD, she helped develop a postpartum support program for women and their families at Concord hospital in Concord, NH. As a researcher, Dr. Banker focuses on decreasing the gap between medical and mental health assessment and treatment. She also studies community trauma and mass shootings. As a doctoral student at Virginia Tech the day of the Virginia Tech mass shootings, Dr. Banker has devoted a portion of her research and advocacy to the prevention and recovery efforts of mass shootings around the United Sates. Dr. Banker has published research on community trauma, young adult sexuality, best practices for training systemic therapists and psychotherapy interventions related to women’s health. She has presented her research to mental health communities all around the world.

As an academic, Dr. Banker has taught both graduate students and medical residents. She directed the CLU counseling psychology program for 7 years. In 2020, Dr. Banker received the CLU President’s award of teaching excellence, the University’s top teaching honor that was created to “recognize professors who are held in high esteem by their peers, students and the rest of the university community.” Prior to her work at CLU, she taught medical residents at Dartmouth Medical Residency and therapists to work together as a team when providing health care. She also taught the training physicians about the psychological aspects of their jobs as medical doctors.

Dr. Banker sits on multiple boards and committees nationally and internationally. From 2018-2020, she held an appointed seat on the Ventura County Behavioral Health Advisory Board.
