Area Schools Assisted by CLU/CSUCI Mathematics Partnership

Students in Santa Paula and Fillmore will benefit from a unique partnership between California Lutheran University and California State University Channel Islands. The CLU/CSUCI Mathematics Project, which began last summer when teachers from throughout Ventura County attended sessions on teaching fractions and geometry, has expanded to support math teachers in low performance school districts.

Faculty members from both universities are now working with math teachers in Santa Paula and Fillmore school districts to help raise their students' standardized test scores in math. Since January, 83 kindergarten through eighth–grade teachers and principals have been participating in training sessions that are aligned with the California Mathematics Content Standards and the newly adopted textbooks. Sessions will continue in Santa Paula through June 3.

Funded by the state, the California Mathematics Project (CMP) is one of nine discipline–based projects in the network of California Subject Matter Projects with the primary goal of increasing student performance. CMP programs support teachers in the development of content knowledge and pedagogical skills necessary to support the improvement of mathematics education in low–performing schools and to establish long–term partnerships between CMP sites and the schools. The CLU and CSUCI partnership is the first partnership that brings together the resources of private and public universities.
