Amgen Foundation Increases Funding for Science Institute at CLU

Annual Summer Science Institute focuses on local science teachers

(THOUSAND OAKS, CA) A $210,600 grant to assist science teachers has been awarded to California Lutheran University by the Amgen Foundation. The purpose of the annual Amgen Summer Science Institute is to assist local elementary and secondary school teachers in improving science education in their classrooms.

The grant will support the fourth Amgen Summer Science Institute on the university’s campus this summer. One of the Amgen Foundation’s major goals is to strengthen science teaching in our schools, according to Jean J. Lim, M.P.P., Vice President of the Amgen Foundation. “The successful Amgen Summer Science Institute at CLU is an excellent way to connect with science teachers in our region,” she added.

The 2005 Amgen Summer Science Institute will consist of four week–long science workshops for secondary teachers and one week of science instruction for elementary school teachers, according to Andrea Huvard, Ph.D., and Beverly Bryde, Ph.D., CLU’s co–directors of the Institute. Each workshop will be team–taught by two CLU faculty members – one from the science division and one from the CLU School of Education. In addition to on–site classes, participants will be given instructional materials to use in their classrooms and share with other teachers.

Each participant will receive a total of $1,000 including a personal stipend of $500, $300 to purchase science supplies for their schools and another $200 for attending a follow–up workshop. Participants will be selected on a competitive basis, and topics range from marine science to molecular biology and chemistry. The first session of the 2005 Amgen Summer Science Institute begins on June 27. For further information about the workshops or to request an application package, please contact Dr. Huvard at huvard@clunet.edu
