Amgen Summer Science Institute Set to Begin at CLU

Science Teachers Given Grants to Learn Cutting–Edge Science Techniques

THOUSAND OAKS, CA – Science teachers from around the county will be filling the labs at California Lutheran University as the Fourth Annual Amgen Summer Science Institute gets under way on June 27. The program, which includes generous stipends, is geared mainly to middle and high school science teachers to improve science education in their classrooms. However, a new weeklong program for elementary school teachers has been added this year.

The Amgen Foundation provided a $210,600 grant for the Institute to be held for the fourth consecutive year on the CLU campus. The 2005 Amgen Summer Science Institute will consist of four weeklong science workshops, according to Andrea Huvard, Ph.D., and Beverly Bryde, Ph.D., CLU’s co–directors of the Institute. Workshop topics will include marine science, evolutionary essentials, molecular biology and chemistry, and earth science. The courses run from June 27 through Aug. 5.

Each workshop is team–taught by two CLU faculty members – one from the science division and one from the School of Education. In addition to on–site classes, participants will be given instructional materials to use in their classrooms and share with other teachers.

Each participant receives a total of $1,000 including a personal stipend of $500, $300 to purchase science supplies for their classrooms and another $200 for attending a follow–up workshop. For further information about the workshop or to request an application package, contact Dr. Andrea Huvard at (805) 493–3341 or email huvard@clunet.edu
