CLU Symposium Explores Peacebuilding in the Global Era

Keynote address will focus on peace initiatives in India

(THOUSAND OAKS, CA – September 2005) –– California Lutheran University will host a symposium on Peacebuilding in the global Era on Tuesday, Oct. 4, through Friday, Oct. 7. The programs and presentations will be held in Preus–Brandt Forum and Samuelson Chapel.

In a globalizing world, we face unprecedented opportunities as well as dangers, explains Dr. Nathan Tierney, professor of philosophy and coordinator of the symposium. Many problems have moved beyond the ability of single nation–states to resolve them: war and terrorism, hunger and poverty, the environment, world health and trade, population movements and refugees, communication and education. In such a world, peacebuilding is the cornerstone of progress, he adds.

CLU will host the four–day symposium of lectures, faculty and student panels, religious services, videos and discussion sessions in hope of sowing seeds of peace. Keynote speaker Father Cedric Prakash, Director of the Prashant Center for Human Rights, Justice and Peace in Gujarat, India, will speak on the "Challenges to Peacebuilding in India" on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. in Samuelson Chapel.

Admission is free. Sponsored by the Artists and Speakers Series, Philosophy Department and Office of Campus Ministry. For program details, visit the symposium Web site at www.callutheran.edu/peacebuilding. For information, call Dr. Nathan Tierney at (805) 493–3232 or e–mail tierney@clunet.edu.
