Teachers Get Into Science with CLU’s Amgen Summer Science Institute

Local educators use grants to learn cutting–edge science techniques

More than 75 local science teachers will be going beyond the world of Bunsen burners and test tubes as they participate in the Amgen Summer Science Institute at California Lutheran University. The program, which includes generous stipends, is geared to elementary, middle and high school science teachers to improve science education in their classrooms.

Funded by a $200,000 grant from The Amgen Foundation, the Institute is being held for the third consecutive year on the CLU campus. This week (July 19–23) the Institute features sessions on Earth Science and Science for Elementary School Teachers. Sessions on Life Science and Environmental Science will be held the weeks of July 26 and Aug. 2, respectively. (See page 2 for a description of the sessions.)

Each workshop will be team–taught by two or more CLU faculty members – one from the science division and one from the School of Education. In addition to on–site classes, participants will be given instructional materials to use in their classrooms and share with other teachers. For information on specific times and locations of activities, contact Dr. Julia Sieger of CLU’s School of Education at (805) 493–3019 or Josette Trumpy at (805) 493–3844.
