CLU Confers more than 800 degrees at Commencement Services

First doctoral degrees conferred by university

(THOUSAND OAKS, CA – May 13, 2006) – Swedish diplomat Jan Eliasson addressed the 527 bachelor’s degree graduates and their guests during the morning Commencement services at California Lutheran University on May 13. Eliasson, along with CLU regent and businesswoman Joan Young and businessman John Notter, received honorary doctor of laws degrees at the ceremony. During the afternoon ceremony, more than 300 graduates received master’s degrees and 13 candidates received their doctoral degrees.

Eliasson has served in many major European posts as well as ambassador to the United States and to the United Nations. As president of the 60th session of the United Nations General Assembly, he has endeavored to increase awareness among people and nations of the urgency for international solutions.

During undergraduate ceremonies, special recognition was given to members of the Class of 1966. Former CLU president Luther Luedtke and his wife Carol were inducted as honorary alumni by Krister Swanson, a member of the Class of 1989 and president of the CLU Alumni Association.

Dr. Charles Weis, Ventura County Superintendent of Schools, addressed the students who received master’s and doctoral degrees. The 13 doctor of education in educational leadership graduates are the first to receive doctoral degrees from CLU.
