CLU to Award Honorary Degree to Carthage College President

(THOUSAND OAKS, CA – February 2007) – F. Gregory Campbell, president of Carthage College, will receive an honorary degree from California Lutheran University on Friday, Feb. 23. The 18th president of Carthage College will be awarded the Doctor of Humane Letters honoris causa during the installation ceremonies for CLU’s sixth president, John R. Sladek. CLU and Carthage are affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

Campbell, who has led Carthage College since 1987, previously served as the special assistant to the president, secretary of the Board of Trustees, and senior lecturer at The University of Chicago. Preceding his 16 years in Chicago, he taught or held administrative positions at Yale University and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Born in Columbia, Tenn., Campbell earned a bachelor’s degree from Baylor University, a master’s degree from Emory University, and a doctorate from Yale. He has conducted research at Philipps-Universität in Germany; Charles University, Prague; the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in Prague; and at the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard University.

Campbell is a board member of Thrivent Mutual Funds, United Hospital Systems, the Johnson Family Funds, the Center for Advanced Technology and Innovation of Racine County, and the Prairie School in Racine, Wis. He also serves as a member of Congressman Paul Ryan’s Education Advisory Board, the Kenosha County Workforce Development Board and Youth Council, and an independent commission studying the Racine Unified School District.

A current member of the NCAA Division III Presidents Council Advisory Group, Campbell previously served as secretary of the Wisconsin Foundation for Independent Colleges and as chairman of the Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities.

The formal inauguration of John Sladek will be held at 2 p.m. on Feb. 23 in the Gilbert Sports and Fitness Center. Members of the community are invited to attend the ceremony as well as the lectures and concerts during the week.

A renowned researcher and successful administrator, Sladek’s scholarly work is in the field of neurology and anatomy. He served as Vice Chancellor for Research at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center from 2001 to 2006. He was also a professor in the Department of Psychiatry and a member of the Neuroscience Program in the School of Medicine. Previously, he held faculty leadership positions at The Chicago Medical School (1991-2001) and the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry (1982-1991).

An undergraduate alumnus of Carthage College with degrees in biology and chemistry, Sladek received his master of science in biostructure from Northwestern University Medical School in 1968. He went on to receive his doctorate in anatomy in 1971 from The Chicago Medical School where he began his career in teaching, researching and publishing.
