California Lutheran University’s TRIO programs received a $25,000 grant from Southern California Edison, announced John Sladek, Ph.D., President of CLU. The grant will be used to fund the summer components of the program that assists low income and first generation college students.

For more than 25 years, the TRIO programs have provided assistance for CLU students from around the globe. The programs are designed to assist low income and first generation college students with the opportunity to earn college credits in various areas of study.

In recent years the summer programs were supported by funding from a James Irvine Foundation grant that CLU received in 2003. According to Damien Pena, Senior Director of Academic Programs, the Southern California Edison grant will further assist the success of the programs that have struggled to keep up with the recent increase in enrollment.

“This grant will greatly enhance the opportunities we can provide to students and ensure their place in secondary education,” noted Pena. He added that additional field trips, laboratories and guest speakers are among the resources that will be available to students because of the grant.
