Prior to coming to CLU, Terence R. Cannings served as Dean of the School of Education and Behavioral Sciences at Azusa Pacific University for three years and as Associate Dean of Education at Pepperdine University for nine years.

(THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – March 19, 2008) Terence R. Cannings is retiring as a dean at California Lutheran University, where he has led the School of Education since 2005. His retirement on May 31 will mark the close of a 46-year career in education.

Prior to coming to CLU, Cannings served as Dean of the School of Education and Behavioral Sciences at Azusa Pacific University for three years and as Associate Dean of Education at Pepperdine University for nine years. A native of Australia, the Newbury Park resident completed his undergraduate work at the University of New England and earned his master’s in education from the University of Sydney. He completed his doctoral degree at UCLA, where he was named the School of Education’s outstanding student of the year.

Carol A. Bartell will return to CLU to serve as dean for two years. The Moorpark resident will lead the School of Education through a joint re-accreditation visit by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC). CLU received NCATE accreditation in 2004, making it one of only five independent universities in California to achieve this distinction. A national search for a permanent dean will be conducted following the accreditation process.

A former professor at the University of Iowa and University of the Pacific, Bartell served as Dean of CLU’s School of Education from 1995 to 2003. A graduate of Concordia University in River Forest, Ill., she received her master’s in early childhood development from the University of Michigan, and her doctorate in educational administration from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Va.

As a consultant for program evaluation and research for the CCTC, Bartell has led accreditation visits at universities throughout the state. Since leaving CLU, she has served as a dean at Cal State Los Angeles and Cal Poly, Pomona, and most recently as Director of the College of Education Doctoral Program at California State University Northridge.

"We are pleased to welcome Carol back to CLU," said Chris Kimball, Ph.D., Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs. "Her previous leadership roles have provided her with extensive knowledge of current trends in teacher education, and her participation in national forums on education will bring added recognition to our School of Education."
