Distinguished educator to speak at CLU

Arthur L. Costa is a professor of education emeritus at California State University, Sacramento, and the author of "The School as a Home for the Mind."

(THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Sept. 16, 2010) Distinguished educator Arthur L. Costa will deliver this year's Michael A. Moffitt Memorial Educational Leadership Lecture on Thursday, Oct. 7, at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks.

"Five Thoughts for a More Thought-full Curriculum" will be presented in the Lundring Events Center. CLU's School of Education and Corwin, a Thousand Oaks-based publisher that produces professional development resources for Pre-K through 12th-grade educators, are sponsoring the free event.

Costa is a professor of education emeritus at California State University, Sacramento, and the author of numerous articles and books, including "The School as a Home for the Mind" published by Corwin. He is the co-founder of the Institute for Habits of Mind in Westport, Conn. He has served as a classroom teacher, a curriculum consultant, an assistant superintendent for instruction, and as the Director of Educational Programs for NASA. He has made presentations and conducted workshops in all 50 states as well as six of the seven continents. Costa has served as president of both the California and National Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.

His lecture will examine how societal changes require educators to develop students with the knowledge, problem-solving skills, cognitive processes, intellectual dispositions and habits of mind necessary to engage in lifelong learning. He will discuss how to make learning and instruction more reflective, more complex and more relevant to society's and students' diverse needs and interests now and in the future.

A cocktail reception begins at 6 p.m. and will be followed by the lecture at 6:30 p.m. and a book signing at 8 p.m.

The School of Education established the annual Michael A. Moffitt Memorial Educational Leadership Lecture, which was made possible by Karla Lysdal-Moffitt in memory of educator Michael A. Moffitt, who was passionate about teaching.
