Borderline....We remember together

Dear Cal Lutheran Community,

We remember the tragic shooting on November 7, 2018, at Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks with heavy hearts. Borderline was a place where students from Cal Lutheran and other local colleges would gather weekly for the country music dance night. Patrons held lively conversations and made joyful connections in an environment that encouraged them to build relationships, savor life, and enjoy a midweek respite.

How heart-wrenching it was and is that the night unfolded in tragedy. We remember those in our community who were present that night and experienced its violence. As those who were affected by this horrific event continue to heal, let us remember, name, and celebrate the lives of the Borderline 12. These members of our community were taken that night:

  • Sgt. Ron Helus
  • Sean Adler
  • Cody Coffman
  • Blake Dingman
  • Jake Dunham
  • Alaina Housley
  • Daniel Manrique
  • Justin Meek '18
  • Mark Meza
  • Kristina Morisette
  • Telemachus Orfanos
  • Noel Sparks

Living with lament is never easy. Honoring our grief and the fragility of life can guide us along the road to healing. In time, we may experience a sense of wholeness amid our brokenness.

Please be aware that there are several events within the Cal Lutheran and local community that  honor this anniversary. You are welcome to attend all or any of them.

  • Spotlight on HSI Week / Enfoque en la Semana de las HSI
    September 12, 2024

With what I hope to be the hottest days of the academic year behind us — temperature wise — I am excited to share that this week California Lutheran University is celebrating National Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Week. Only 600 institutions in the United States have the honor of engaging in such festivities, and we are proud to be among them.

  • Grateful for You
    June 13, 2024

To say I feel welcomed into this community would be the understatement of my working life. Since my first official day on the job, I have had the privilege of meeting many of you. You have welcomed me with open arms at local church services, a synod assembly, during impromptu conversations along "the spine," and at The Habit for lunch and Starbucks for coffee.
