April is AAPI Month at Cal Lu

Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students

Each May, our nation recognizes Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month – an opportunity to learn about and pay tribute to the myriad and wonderfully diverse contributions that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have made to the U.S. Like other college campuses whose Spring terms end in early or mid-May, Cal Lutheran will celebrate AAPI Heritage month in April to ensure that our students can participate in AAPI Month activities before they buckle down in preparation for final exams and projects.

As is the case with other months designated to honor a certain group, we should think of AAPI Heritage Month as one of many opportunities (versus a “one and done” activity) to learn about AAPI colleagues and other AAPI people. On our own campuses, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, as well as international students, faculty and staff of Asian descent, are vital and vibrant members of our University living and learning communities.

The programs that mark the 2022 Cal Lutheran AAPI month have been designed and implemented via partnerships and collaborations between the Office of Talent, Culture and Diversity, CCEI, the API Affinity Group, and registered student organizations. Together, these groups have worked hard to bring us a month-long schedule of events and activities that highlight the richly diverse experiences, pursuits, passions, and identities of friends, colleagues, and leaders of Asian and Pacific Islander heritage.

The month’s first event takes place tomorrow on Thursday, March 31 with a Lu’ua hosted by the Kappua Hawaii Club.  A couple weeks later, Cal Lu will welcome Dr. Frances Jeung, cofounder of #StopAsianHate. Dr. Jeung will deliver a presentation on April 19th related to the timely and troubling issues of Asian hate and bigotry. Please see the linked schedule of events for other events as well.

These activities and programs have been planned for both our enjoyment and our enlightenment, and I look forward to seeing many of you at these special events.

Sincerely,

Lori E. Varlotta

President

  • Spotlight on HSI Week / Enfoque en la Semana de las HSI
    September 12, 2024

With what I hope to be the hottest days of the academic year behind us — temperature wise — I am excited to share that this week California Lutheran University is celebrating National Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Week. Only 600 institutions in the United States have the honor of engaging in such festivities, and we are proud to be among them.

  • Grateful for You
    June 13, 2024

To say I feel welcomed into this community would be the understatement of my working life. Since my first official day on the job, I have had the privilege of meeting many of you. You have welcomed me with open arms at local church services, a synod assembly, during impromptu conversations along "the spine," and at The Habit for lunch and Starbucks for coffee.
