Getting into the Groove

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

Spring 2023 is fully upon us, and many are already into the rhythm and groove of the term. Like the opening of most semesters and terms, we are kicking this one off at high speed with a host of programs and services designed to welcome us all back to our California Lutheran University community.

Here are some key programs I bring to your attention.

  • Spring Involvement Fair, Friday, January 27
  • Kingsmen and Regals basketball teams have a double-header at home against Redlands, Saturday, January 28. The Regals tip off at 5:00 p.m. and the Kingsmen at 7:00 p.m. Watch the livestream here if you are unable to attend.
  • Center for Cultural Engagement and Inclusion (CCEI) Open House, Tuesday, January 31
  • Black History Month Events, now through February

  • Center for Global Engagement’s Lunar New Year Celebrations, now through Monday, February 6
  • Education Abroad Fair, Tuesday, February 7
  • CAPS Empowered Voices, Friday, February 24 from 12:00 - 1:30 p.m. in Nygreen 2

  • Faculty and Staff Town Hall, Friday, March 3 at 8:30 a.m. Save the date, more details will follow.

  • Career & Intern Expo, Wednesday, March 8

In addition to these events, the President’s Equity Council (PEC), mentioned in my January 11 note, has come to life. We had our inaugural meeting yesterday and quickly mapped out a few practices to put in place when a tragic event occurs. We agreed that in such situations, the University President or designee will send out a short message acknowledging the occurrence, and when appropriate, call people together to be in physical community. A gathering would include a short but deliberate prayer, reflection, and/or moment of silence.

The PEC recommended, and I concurred, that we could use the Tuesday or Thursday 11:15-11:30 a.m. window for short, solemn gatherings at the Flagpole on the Thousand Oaks campus (like the one we held Tuesday afternoon to commemorate those affected by the shootings at Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay). I ask that our other campuses consider a time and place to earmark for similar prayers and reflections that they may want to coordinate in the aftermath of such atrocities.

If you are feeling a little out of sync during these early weeks of the term, there are many people and places that are here to help. Check out one or more of these:

Best wishes to all as we head into the new term, the new year, and the implementation of many new plans.

  • Spotlight on HSI Week / Enfoque en la Semana de las HSI
    September 12, 2024

With what I hope to be the hottest days of the academic year behind us — temperature wise — I am excited to share that this week California Lutheran University is celebrating National Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Week. Only 600 institutions in the United States have the honor of engaging in such festivities, and we are proud to be among them.

  • Grateful for You
    June 13, 2024

To say I feel welcomed into this community would be the understatement of my working life. Since my first official day on the job, I have had the privilege of meeting many of you. You have welcomed me with open arms at local church services, a synod assembly, during impromptu conversations along "the spine," and at The Habit for lunch and Starbucks for coffee.
