Leonard Smith, Ph.D.

Dr. Leonard Smith taught in the History Department at CLU from 1969 until his retirement in May 1998. In addition to his history classes, he taught interdisciplinary courses in literature, philosophy and religion. Dr. Smith received his academic degrees at Augustana College and Washington University and has received many academic honors and awards throughout a career that began in 1958. With numerous papers and speeches to his credit, he has four books including The Cultural Revolution in Germany: The Lutheran Ethos and Renaissance of History. Dr. Smith chaired the CLU History Department from 1969-1974 and 1988-1992 and served as Fulbright Advisor from 1969-1980. At various times during his tenure at the University, he was Vice Chair of the College Council, Chair of the Education Committee, Chair of the Appointment, Rank & Tenure Committee, Faculty Representative to the Board of Regents, and Faculty Representative and chair of the Athletic Policies Committee. In regard to this award, Dr. Smith states, “It would be an additional honor from CLU, and it would allow me to have the same honor as my three sons - all graduates of CLU.”
