Join us for the Inauguration of Cal Lutheran's ninth president, John A. Nunes, PhD, and a Founders Day Convocation address from the Rev. Lamont Anthony Wells.

On May 17, 2025, the Board of Regents of California Lutheran University unanimously appointed John A. Nunes as the university’s ninth president. With a deep commitment to Cal Lutheran’s mission, President Nunes brings a collaborative and community-centered approach to his work. He is a member of the Council of Independent Colleges’ Academic Leaders Task Force on Campus Free Expression. He was president of Concordia College New York, president and CEO of Lutheran World Relief, and held an endowed professorship at Valparaiso University. He and his wife, Monique, have six children and 13 grandchildren.

The Rev. Lamont Anthony Wells serves as the executive director of the Network of Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Colleges and Universities, representing 28 ELCA-affiliated institutions. He is also the strategic advisor for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Wartburg Theological Seminary and the immediate past national president of the African Descent Lutheran Association. With a career spanning leadership in faith-based communities across New York, Pennsylvania and Georgia, the Rev. Wells has championed ecumenism, social justice and inclusive campus ministry, including serving as Lutheran campus pastor for Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the Atlanta University Center. He previously directed LuMin, a network of over 240 inclusive campus ministries nationwide.
