Program Goals

The goals of the ASCENSO Hispanic Fellowship are as follows:

1. Promote Awareness of Inequities
   Increase students’ understanding of the social, economic, political, and institutional factors that contribute to inequities affecting Ventura County communities. Fellows will identify local social justice issues and examine their impact on access to resources, services, opportunities, and community well-being.

2. Engage in Community-Based Research and Solutions
   Explore local challenges and identify tangible solutions through research, professional internships, and partnerships with community institutions, county agencies, and community leaders. Fellows will investigate policies and services, assess their effectiveness, and develop evidence-informed recommendations that respond to community needs.

3. Develop Advocacy, Communication, and Leadership Skills
   Strengthen students’ abilities to communicate effectively, conduct research, build professional and community relationships, advocate for change, and engage in civic leadership. Fellows will gain practical experience working with community partners and presenting their findings to diverse audiences.

Student Learning Objectives

By participating in the ASCENSO Scholars Fellows program, students will:

• Research: Investigate social justice issues, policies, and services affecting Ventura County communities using credible sources and community-based research methods.
• Engage: Build relationships with county agencies, community organizations, leaders, and other stakeholders to better understand local needs and perspectives.
• Advocate: Develop and communicate evidence-based recommendations that promote greater access, equity, and opportunity.
• Lead: Apply communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and leadership skills to real-world community challenges.
• Reflect: Connect academic learning with community experiences and develop a deeper understanding of their role as engaged citizens and future leaders.
• Create Change: Raise awareness of local issues and contribute to practical efforts that strengthen communities and advance social justice.
