Frequently Asked Questions

What scholarships or aid are available?

OEA offers one need-based scholarship. We consider students automatically for that opportunity when they apply to a program. No extra steps are necessary. There are additional external scholarhip options, like the Gilman Scholarship. For a list of these scholarships, look at this page.

Do I need my passport at the time of application?

No, but we strongly recommend that you apply for one as soon as possible. If you wait too long, you may not have it (or your visa) in time for your program to start.

How do I get more information or meet with an advisor?

Please review the OEA website, email oea@callutheran.edu, or schedule an appointment.

Can I study abroad my last semester at Cal Lutheran?

It's possible, yes, but we don't advise you do so. Host programs often deliver transcripts later than we need them to ensure you graduate on time. If you want to study abroad in your last semester, we'd recommend a faculty-led program instead of a semester option.

Can I study abroad after I graduate?

No, as you need to be an active Cal Lutheran student to participate. Instead, we recommend that you do a non-credit internship or just go on vacation!

Can I go on a semester program that's not listed on the OEA website?

No, students can only join our approved options, as we've reviewed them carefully for safety and academic quality.

I'm a commuter student. Will Cal Lutheran bill me for housing for my semester program?

Yes, as you will incure housing expenses on your program, Cal Lutheran will need to bill you for them.

How do I apply for a visa?

Your host program will provide necessary guidance and documentation for your visa application once they accept you. Please follow those instructions carefully!

When will I hear back regarding my program application?

OEA conduct backtground checks during the week after the application deadline. Once they clear all applicants, they'll provide a decision on your application. OEA does not review applications on a rolling basis.

I need "home school approval" from Cal Lutheran for my host program application. Can you complete it for me?

Only the OEA Director or Assistant Director can complete that approval. Either dropp off the form with us (if paper) or email oea@callutheran.edu with the form (if digital) and they will process it.

Can I arrange my own housing on my program?

No. You must use your host program's arranged housing for safety and security reasons.
