Mild to Moderate Support Needs or Extensive Support Needs

Program Highlights

Teachers are once again in demand.

There is an urgent, critical need for those with a Special Education credential. The prospect of growth for careers in education is high, with an expected turnover of over 100,000 teachers within the next decade due to retirement, according to the California Teachers Association.

Cal Lutheran's Preliminary Education Specialist Credential Program, which offers specializations in Mild-to-Moderate Support Needs (MMSN) and Extensive Support Needs (ESN) and is approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC), prepares candidates to effectively teach students with MMSN and/or ESN in one or more of the following disabilities in kindergarten, grades 1-12 through age 22, and classes organized primarily for adults in services across the continuum of program options available:

  •  MMSN:  autism, emotional disturbance, intellectual disability, multiple disabilities, orthopedic impairment, other health impairment, specific learning disability, and traumatic brain injury
  •  ESN:  autism, deafblind, emotional disturbance, intellectual disability, multiple disabilities, orthopedic impairment, other health impairment, specific learning disability, and traumatic brain injury

Candidates in this program gain a robust blend of theoretical knowledge and ample opportunities for practical application in meaningful settings. In addition to its solid foundation in both theory and practice, the program is further distinguished by its commitment to providing extensive personal support, ensuring that each candidate receives the guidance and resources necessary for success.
