Frequently Asked Questions

What happens to my application if I do not get selected?

If your application is not selected for the program, we encourage you to apply to the next incoming cohort in the fall of 2025.

When can I expect to be notified about my application?

Once we receive your application, we will review the application and receive a notification 2-3 weeks after submission.

Do I need to pay any fees to be in the program?

No, this program is free for Cal Lutheran students. The program will not ask you to purchase any additional materials or costs.

How often should I meet with my mentee/mentor during the program?

Mentors and mentees will meet for one-on-one coaching sessions monthly during the Fall Semester (September, October, and November). The meetings will occur in person or virtually and last up to one hour.

Are there any residency requirements?

No. There is no residency requirement to join the program.

Can international and non-resident undergraduate students join?

All rising sophomore undergraduate students are welcome to join the program. Please refer to the mentee/mentor objectives and roles.

Will mentees get compensation for being in the program?

No. Students will have the opportunity to participate in the mentorship program and be matched with a Cal Lutheran staff mentor who will guide and coach them through any questions they may have about their careers and student experiences. However, swag, prizes, and food will be provided free of cost during events.

What happens after the program ends?

We aim for students to finish the program equipped with skills and resources that will enhance their future career paths. We also encourage both mentees and mentors to foster long-term connections. Mentees who successfully finish the program receive priority eligibility and preference for the VITAL Stipend program. If selected, it offers up to $4,000 in internship funds. See program details

Can I request a specific mentor?

No. The Project VITAL Mentorship committee reviews each application to identify commonalities (e.g., career considerations, various aspects of social identities and lived experiences, academic interests, hobbies, and goals) between potential matches.
