As part of Cal Lutheran’s commitment to developing and sustaining residential communities that are welcoming and affirming of our transgender students, Residence Life offers gender-inclusive housing options in all residential communities for first-year, transfer and returning students.

Gender-inclusive housing is a housing option that allows students to share a living space with fellow students regardless of their sex, gender identity or gender expression.
Residence Life respects the privacy of all students and will not ask for more information than necessary to meet the student's needs. In order to provide the necessary support for students who prefer gender inclusive housing, the Residence Life office must be notified of those needs. Students are encouraged to email reslife@CalLutheran.edu for that support.
When filling out your housing application, please indicate you would like to be considered for gender-inclusive housing. Gender-inclusive housing is optional and no student will be placed in a gender-inclusive room unless they indicate their interest and understanding of this type of housing.
This is the best part! Any room on campus can be considered a gender-inclusive room. This means that a gender inclusive room can be in a standard hall, apartment style or even a house on campus. This allows for the student to choose a room and hall that best suits their needs.
Yes, that would be great! We want students to live with those that they get along with and feel comfortable in their living space. If you have roommates you would like to live with, please list them on your housing application or contact us by email at reslife@CalLutheran.edu.
We cannot guarantee students roommates will Identify certain ways as students opt into gender-inclusive housing for various reasons. While gender-inclusive housing was designed to offer comfortable and safe options for students who identify as transgender, genderqueer, gender questioning, or otherwise outside the gender binary, any student can choose to participate.
Under the Federal Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) Residence Life staff is unable to discuss your personal information with your roommates. We encourage you to reach out to your RA or hall supervisor if you would like support in speaking with your roommates about your identity or living in a gender-inclusive room.
In all living situations, we encourage students to speak openly about what roommates would like their room environment to be like. Topics for this discussion can include gender but can also include issues of cleaning, noise level, guests, etc.
