Meeting Your Roommates

Sharing your living space with others is a quintessential college experience. It's a chance to grow, compromise, and embrace a new chapter with people who will be part of your first college memories. With a little effort from everyone, a thriving community can be made.

How does roommate matching work?

Room assignments are made based on the information you submit on your housing applications. Variables such as personal habits, major, and hobbies are used to match roommates.

While every attempt is made to place you in your first choice residence hall with your requested roommates, there is no perfect method of matching roommates. We do our best to provide you with a good match based on the information we receive.

How can I contact my roommates?

On the day that your housing assignment is released, your assigned roommates will populate on your MyCLU portal, along with their Cal Lutheran email addresses. We encourage you to reach out to your roommates in advance to introduce yourself, decide who is bringing different items to campus, and get to know each other. Be sure to check your Cal Lutheran email as well, in case a roommate is trying to contact you.

How do I talk with my roommates about lifestyle habits, room preferences, etc.?

During your first week on-campus, Resident Assistants (RAs) will work with each roommate group to complete a Roommate Agreement Form. This form serves as a guide for facilitating conversations about cleaning, sleeping/quiet hours, how common spaces will be used, inviting guests over, and more. RAs will keep this form throughout the year, and roommate groups can reference it or make changes to it as needed.

What if I don't have anything in common with my roommates?

If you've never shared a room with someone before, we encourage you to maintain a positive attitude with reasonable expectations about the experience. Having a good roommate doesn't necessarily mean that you are best friends or have common interests.

What's most important is that you maintain open communication and respect each other's needs within your shared living space. These are also the keys to any successful relationship — lifelong skills in the making!

Can I change my roommates?

Room changes are allowed after October 1, however, a room change is the last option and is pursued only after roommates have made a sincere effort to adjust to differences. Please contact your Resident Assistant or hall staff if you are having challenges with your roommates and they will be able to guide you through next steps.
