Let's Celebrate the Year of the Dragon at Cal Lutheran

Learn more about the legend of the Dragon.

2024 is the year of the Wood Dragon, starting from February 10th, 2024 and ending on January 28th, 2025. The sign of the Dragon is a symbol of power, nobility, honor, luck and success in Chinese culture. The year of 2024 is predicted to be the year of change. (Source).

LUNAR NEW YEAR CELEBRATION | FEB. 23

LOCATION CHANGE = UNIVERSITY PLAZA | 12 PM - 2 PM

Join the Center for Global Engagement in collaboration with Student Life for the CLU Lunar New Year Celebration! Watch a presentation of the Asian lion dance and the rhythms of Taiko Drums from Togen Daiko while enjoying delicious Asian food. There will also be traditional arts and craft activites for attendees. Admission is free and all are welcome!

CELEBRATORY DATES 

FEB 9: Chinese New Year's Eve | FEB 10: Chinese New Year's Day | FEB 24: The Lantern Festival

The Lunar New Year Eve is the start of the spring festival that began 3,500 years ago. This is the most important date of the celebrations. Current customs focus on family reunions and gathering together as a community with the official year welcomed at midnight. 

New Year's Day is a day for visiting with family and friends, sharing gifts and making respects at family graves. Each day includes special significane with associated activty for the community, laeding up to the final day of the celebrations. 

On Saturday, February 24, the Lantern Festival is celebrated to close out the festivities. Traditional customs include hanging colorful lanterns with messages/riddles written on them, eating sweet rice balls, watching dragon/lion dances, and enjoying fireworks!
